Establishing a “Complete” Cloud Communications Platform

The world of microservices and Kubernetes is dramatically different than server or VM-based platforms and it is no small challenge to port legacy applications into a modern cloud world.

Telecom equipment vendors have recognized for a long time that a cloud-native architecture is ultimately going to be the most efficient, flexible, reliable and scalable way to deliver the infrastructure necessary to power today’s communications services. Recently, I read a blog post from Ribbon Communications where they discussed how their cloud-native SBC and core IMS elements take advantage of microservices and Kubernetes to deliver observability, scalability, reliability, and manageability in ways that were challenging with previous architectures. At Alianza, we could not agree more that cloud-native is the future. However, the world of microservices and Kubernetes is dramatically different than server or VM-based platforms and it is no small challenge to port legacy applications into a modern cloud world.

Unfortunately, that is not the only challenge. The public cloud options available from hyperscalers were built with the requirements of IT workloads in mind. Yet, the requirements of IT workloads are dramatically different than the requirements of a telecommunications network. In the telecommunications sector, we are always talking about the demands of real-time communications and highly critical use cases, including 911 emergency services, demands that exceed the requirements of standard IT applications. Telecom also requires five 9s of availability, and the public cloud service level agreements (SLAs) are often significantly lower than that. These facts have presented real roadblocks to anyone who wants to build a robust telecommunications platform in the cloud.

Several years ago, Alianza made the decision to move away from our previous generation server and VM-based platform to one that was completely microservices based because we knew that was ultimately going to be the best place to deliver an innovative and reliable service to our service provider customers. We built a tremendous product and engineering team who truly understands how to build a telecom grade platform on top of IT grade cloud services.

So while many vendors are just beginning to explore the cloud-native approach, at Alianza, we’ve fully embraced this transformation. We’ve overcome the inherent challenges of migrating from legacy architectures and have built a platform that not only meets but exceeds the unique demands of the telecommunications industry. As the telecommunications landscape continues to evolve, we remain committed to leading the way with a cloud-native approach that delivers the highest level of service, reliability and innovation, for you, our Service Provider customers.
